2015 MTV Video Music Award Trends

By Amanda L. Colborn

Whether you tuned into this year’s VMA’s or not, you’ve probably read more than your fair share of celebrity gossip. But what about that evening really matters?

The jewelry of course!  But don’t worry, we at the American Gem Society take great pride in paying special attention to the jewelry of the rich and famous so you don’t have to.

This year’s Video Music Awards did not disappoint.

Jewelry at the VMA’s is interesting because unlike other award shows, the VMA’s are less glitz and glam and more edgy and fun. This was particularly the case when it came to this year’s jewelry. Lots of new and somewhat surprising trends were seen gracing the red carpet before the event.

One of the most prevalent trends that we noticed was a resurgence in Yellow Gold. At the American Gem Society, we love yellow gold! So of course we are thrilled to see it appearing more and more in today’s fashion. It’s not just on for the red carpet, but for every day wear as well, as seen in the photo below!

Another trend that we saw a lot of on the red carpet were Mix-and-Match Earrings, and also Ear Climbers. Ear climbers are a refreshing take on the every-day stud earring. They literally appear to “climb” up the wearers ear and offer a spectacular eye-catching look.

Another look, whether it be on the red carpet or just an extra touch to the perfect date-night outfit, is jewelry with a minimalist design. Minimalist Jewelry adds a touch of sophistication and elegance to every outfit. It is beautiful on its own or paired with different matching pieces. Check out some of the designs below from AGS members featuring this stunning trend.

Lastly, a unique trend that we spotted at the VMA’s were cool and edgy Black Diamonds. Be it earrings, rings, or pendants; black diamonds offer a more discrete but equally luxurious look compared to colorless diamonds. They also look amazing when paired with colorless diamonds, as you can see below.

Jewelry with a Cause: Gumuchian creates awareness for HoneyLove

By Donna Jolly, RJ
American Gem Society

American Gem Society member Gumuchian recently introduced a new collection they hope will help create awareness of the declining honeybee population, which is affecting plant life and food supply worldwide. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the collection – simply named “B” – will be donated to the non-profit, HoneyLove.org, which supports urban beekeeping and home gardens.  According to recent studies, including those by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one in every three bites of food consumed in the United States is either directly or indirectly pollinated by bees.

“I have never been afraid of bees. I think they’re wonderful” said Patricia Gumuchian, who was inspired to design the collection after reading numerous articles about the effects that a declining honeybee population would have on the environment. “I look around our office of women and think about the worker bees – who are the female bees – and how valuable they are to our livelihood. Our family gatherings and holidays largely center on all types of foods. What would happen if these things just went away? The effects could be detrimental. We need to change what’s going on.”

The suite itself will be offered in 18K gold and includes both link and cuff bracelets, earrings, pendants, rings, and five different bee-related charms. “Many of our collections are inspired by nature” said Vice President of Sales, Myriam Gumuchian, “but this aspect of nature didn’t just inspire the designs, it also inspired us to be part of something bigger. A productive hive consists of successful teamwork, which we demonstrate daily in our New York office. The ‘B’ collection represents our appreciation of these remarkable creatures and our goal is to bring awareness to this growing problem. If honeybees continue to decline at the rate they are, we are all in big trouble.”

Jewels of the 2013 Emmy’s

By Lisa Bridge, Certified Gemologist, Ben Bridge

The Emmys are an exciting night for television, but the fashion and jewelry worlds get to play along too. All in all the stars made good choices in their jewelry.

I was surprised by the number of celebrity comments on how nervous they were wearing their jewelry on the red carpet. While there were some very expensive pieces, aren’t these the people we consider our American royalty? Shouldn’t they know how to wear jewelry? Also, isn’t the number one rule of the red carpet to look confident (whether you feel that way or not)?

In spite of some insecurities, there were some great jewelry moments. A few of my favorites were:

*Anna Faris’ lizard brooch worn on the back of her dress. The yellow dress and the green, demantoid lizard were stunning together. The insouciant lizard made the beautiful dress into something quite special. It was unique, charming, and memorable. What more could you want from the red carpet?Anna_Faris_Lizard_Brooch

*I loved the stars who embraced yellow gold at the Emmys. Many of us have anxiously been awaiting its return and by the look of the red carpet, there is definite progress. Padma Lakshmi went “all in” on yellow gold. With an architectural bracelet that took up much of her arm, the statement was a perfect complement to her structured white gown.

*Quite a few women wore big colored gemstone rings. Between the emerald rings on Mayim Bialik and Sofia Vergara (whose ring was 40 carats) and Zooey Deschanel’s tourmaline ring, I couldn’t stop looking at everyone’s hands!

*Men are often left out of the bejeweled fun of awards shows, but thankfully last night a few joined the party. George Katsiopoulos of E! News wore a cluster of Forevermark diamonds on his lapel. It was just the right extra touch, both classy and visually interesting.

Happily there are many more award shows to look forward to and hopefully impressive jewelry to go along with them.
