3 Reasons Why We Love Peridot, the August Birthstone

By Kevin P. McVay

August’s birthstone is the magical peridot, a yellow-green to lime-green gemstone that is said to have healing properties that help bring its wearers power and influence. There are many reasons why we like the peridot, even if we weren’t born in August.

The peridot might be what we need to complete the finishing touches to our perfect summer look. Here’s why we think it’s so popular:

  1. It has history. The Egyptians called it the “gem of the sun.” Some even believe that Cleopatra’s famous emerald collection might have actually been peridot. The Romans used the gem as a protection from enchantment. In the Middle Ages, it was worn for foresight and inspiration.
  2. It’s the perfect accent for most summer colors. The peridot, with its green hue, is unique because it’s subtle, adding radiance to its simplicity. Its refreshingly lighter color complements cheerful reds, curious blues, sunny yellows and crisp whites, all summer colors that are sure to shine bright in the heat of the day. The gemstone is the perfect match for taking strolls through the park, soaking up the sun and getting in touch with nature.
  3. It’s versatile. The peridot can be set into necklaces, rings, bracelets and other stunning jewelry pieces. It strikes an especially distinctive note when matched with gold and silver. The vivacious gemstone is also associated with truth and faithfulness. What’s not to love?

So there we have it. As we prepare for the last month of summer, let’s take a moment to reflect on the beauty of the peridot gemstone. Looking for one of your own? Check out our Find A Jeweler page to search for American Gem Society jewelers near you! Have a happy August!
